If you are a true Kolkataite or SRKian, then we are sure that you must be disappointed by last night’s (13/4/21) performance of the team against Mumbai Indians.

Apart from the defending champions Mumbai Indians and MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders are the only team that annexed the title twice, in 2012 and 2014.

Therefore, the bar of expectations from the Kolkata Knight Riders has certainly risen up, because of the new captain, Eoin Morgan.

Will the KKR players be able to conquer the IPL 2021? Read further to clear your doubts.

Brief History of Kolkata Knight Riders

Kolkata Knight Riders are one of the most popular teams in the IPL tournament. It is a team that became champion in IPL for two seasons. Shahrukh Khan and Jay Mehta own KKR. In the year of 2012, they became the champions of IPL for the first time.

Sunil Narine and Robin Uthappa, two recent signings, have contributed to the team’s success. They won the title again in 2014, boosted by Manish Pandey, Suryakumar Yadav, Piyush Chawla, and Andre Russell. The next three years were hopeful, but the Kolkata Knight Riders did not win another title. Gambhir’s tenure came to an end when he was not re-signed before the 2018 auction.

In 2018, Dinesh Karthik was given the controlling power to lead the team. With an eye on the future, a young squad got formed around him, including Narine and Russell. Kolkata Knight Riders finished third in their first season under Karthik’s leadership.

He stepped down midway through the 2020 IPL season, handing the captaincy to Eoin Morgan, who guided them to fifth place in the season.
Kolkata Knight Riders’ two championships in the history of the Indian Premier League remain their all-time high. As a consequence of the team’s poor performance in the previous four seasons, the first victory, in 2012, was remarkable. The win against the Kings XI Punjab in 2014, when they chased the highest-ever IPL final total, concreted that year’s squad as legends for all time.

In the last IPL season 2020, Kolkata Knight Riders ended the season being in the fifth position. In a tight season in which they struggled to gain any grip, KKR’s place on the points table was flattering.
Narine and Russell were out for extended stretches, and they lost more games than they won under new captain Morgan, who took over after seven games.

Kolkata Knight Riders, on the other hand, found a unique gemstone in Varun Chakravarthy, the mystery spinner.

Auction for 2021 IPL

In the IPL 2021 auction, they acquired two quality players, Shakib Al Hasan and Harbhajan Singh.

In IPL 2021, the team would aim for a turnaround under Eoin Morgan’s leadership.
Despite a pathetic IPL 2020 season, Kolkata Knight Riders did not make drastic changes to the team. Shubman Gill, Nitish Rana, Eoin Morgan, Dinesh Karthik, and Andre Russell still make KKR’s batting line-up, the same as the previous season.

In the powerplay overs, the decision to open with Sunil Narine had affected the team adversely. It would be interesting to see if the Kolkata Knight Riders’ strategists stick with the same strategy or go with two specialist openers like Gill and Rahul Tripathi.

Considering Kuldeep Yadav’s poor performance in the last two IPL seasons, the management may have been tempted to play Harbhajan Singh ahead of Kuldeep, along with Varun Chakravarthy, who has performed brilliantly in his career.

Two outstanding pacers, Pat Cummins and Lockie Ferguson, have also occupied a place in the team. Another Indian pace bowler Prasidh Krishna, who recently made a memorable debut for the senior squad in the ODI series against England has also paved his path to Kolkata Knight Riders.

To date, Kolkata Knight Riders have played only two games in 2021. In the first match with Sunrisers Hyderabad, KKR won by ten runs. In the second match played with Mumbai Indians that KKR lost by ten runs.

The next game of Kolkata’s favorite team is locked with Royal Challengers Bangalore on 18th April.
Winning Probability

The chance of Morgan, Russell, and lower order is the primary concern for the team. But if they play consistently, they can win the title again for the third time.

They have experienced players in their squad and fresh players who are looking for a chance to play for the team. Rahul Tripathi and Nitish Rana are back with runs on their bat, and the bowling squad also is imposing. They can come back into the league, and chances are there to win the championship.

Furthermore, the experience of Harbhajan Singh can also turn the odds in their favor.
Though Kolkata Knight Riders slipped from the track in their last game against Mumbai Indians on Tuesday, the deciding matches are still left.
