Google results in 2021 show Kannada as ‘Ugliest Language of India’: Apologises and Removed the Result after Uproar




It seems like the top tech giants such as Google, Twitter, WhatsApp are going through a rough patch in India in 2021.
Google who previously dodged the criticism after accepting the NEW IT Rules 2021.
But the things now seem difficult for the company after it showed Kannada as the ugliest Indian language.

Recently a google search result displayed Kannada as the ugliest Language that possesses a history of more than 2,500 years. After facing severe backlash, Google removed the search result and issued an apology on Twitter

A Google search with the keywords “ugliest language in India” displayed “Kannada” in the results, sparking a massive outrage with the Karnataka government stating it will issue a legal notice to the search engine.
Google India said on Thursday that it is not the reflection of the company, as it apologized for the misunderstanding and hurting any sentiments.

The Search result sparked outrage among the netizens earlier in the day, with the Karnataka government threatening to issue a legal notice to the company. “Search isn’t always perfect. Sometimes, the way content is described on the Internet can yield surprising results to specific queries,” a Google India spokesperson told IANS in a statement.

“We know this is not ideal, but we take swift corrective action when we are made aware of an issue and are continually working to improve our algorithms. Naturally, these are not reflective of the opinions of Google, and we apologize for the misunderstanding and hurting any sentiments,” the company spokesperson added.

Massive Uproar Among the Netizens 

As the spark of the controversy started raging, many of the Ministers, as well as netizen, flooded the Twitter by expressing their discontentment and resentment.  

Culture and Forest Minister of Karnataka, Aravind Limbavali, tweeted and highlighted the controversy and also demanded an apology from the Google portal. He tweeted, “The Kannada language has a history of its own, having come into existence as many as 2,500 years ago! It has been the pride of Kannadigas all through these two-and-a-half millennia. If Kannada is now called the ugliest language in India, it is merely an attempt by Google to insult this pride of Kannadigas.”

A Mohan shows Kannada as the ‘Ugliest” language in India.  He stated that  Karnataka is home to the great Vijayanagara empire and the Kannada language has a rich heritage, a glorious legacy and unique culture. “One of the world’s oldest languages, Kannada had great scholars who wrote epics much before Geoffrey Chaucer was born in the 14th century. Apologise @GoogleIndia,” he tweeted. 

When the screenshot shared by Mohan went viral on Twitter, social media platforms were flooded with fury, demanding an apology from the company portal and tech giant as well as the removal of any such impudent content regarding any language, including Kannada. The language is spoken by 60 million people and is one of the oldest languages in the world. 

President AAP Youth Wing, Karnataka, Mukund Gowda, shared a letter on Facebook which he wrote to Google India Vice President Sanjay Gupta. He wrote, “I take a serious exception to the search results shown by Google when someone searches for ‘Ugliest Languages in India’. Unfortunately, ‘Kannada’ is the answer which comes up on the screen.”

He further wrote, “While there is no Ugly Language in India, Google should have been sensitive to even show any result for this search. I believe this is the result gathered based on inputs and user experience that is logged as answered by some anti-Kannada users of Google.”

He requested Sanjay Singh, Google India VP, to immediately take down the search result and trace people who are playing with the sentiments of Kannadigas. 

About the Kannada Language

Kannada is one of the oldest living languages of the world. It is a classical and scheduled language of India.  Its words are found in 2000-year-old books. It is also said to be mentioned in 2500-year-old Greek Dramas. Kannada has a source of mainly Sanskrit, Prakrit and Pali languages. It started with Old Kannada, then medieval Kannada afterwards, New Kannada, which we are using now. It welcomes words of all languages, including English. 5- It is one of the official languages of the Republic of India and the official and administrative language of the Indian state, Karnataka.

6- Kannada is one of the Indian languages to feature in the Wikipedia logo
