Cognitive Load theory practice can help to improve mental stability in work & personal life. A few months ago, this pandemic took a drastic change in everyone’s life. Schools, Offices, Businesses were shut down. As said, “The show must go on” suits the situation where businesses, schools, and offices have once again started but we’ve to work from home.
While working at home, makes everyone sleepy, thus the concentration level is disturbed. Work from home becomes a big distraction as your memory is focused on other work as well. It’s more difficult for working parents than for a woman, who has to look after her office and household work with managing a child’s online virtual classes. It becomes hectic for them to balance their mind & concentrate on one particular thing. After completion of all-day work, it feels exhausted to do any other entertaining or new task at end of the busy day.
Cognitive Load Theory
To reduce the mental fatigue of the mind, educational psychologist John Sweller initiated the theory named “Cognitive Load Theory”. The information received is directed towards your working memory. Working memory holds a memory for a limited period. Heavy information on working memory leads to mental instability. Juggling with large information can make you enter into an expert zone where large information will be directed towards long-term memory.
COVID-19 – New phase with Multiple Stress Levels
COVID-19 has dysfunctional the mental understanding of many people.
Intrinsic load represents inborn complications to indulge in a certain task. The harder the activity, the load increases. Changing in a new environment creates a disturbance in work.
Where working from the office, one can easily connect to important meetings, whereas looking at the recent scenarios, online conferencing becomes tedious. Online video conferencing needs a proper Internet connection, Software, and much more.
In simple, explaining a bar graph is much easier than a complex histogram. Forcing to adapt new routine throws a direct impact on your working memory.
CLT indicates to ‘Extraneous Cognitive Load – creates a distraction while working that are less important stuff of information that is shown to the people. Primary work is going on & simultaneously as a second thought that comes to you becomes a distraction.
Example:- A women having work from home have to look at her video call & simultaneously, the work of the household becomes a distraction.
the theory is based on Emotion. Emotions bring anxiety and hence, lower your working memory capacity making it harder for memory to grasp any information. Stress increases when you perform multiple tasks at the same time. It’s like driving a car test with multiple tasks to be done simultaneously.
Although we all are tired of uncertainty, look for the positive side like family members can give time to their loved ones, launching of many apps to keep everyone busy. Uncertainty gives hand to hand for the cognitive load. Fear of unemployment, fear, or threat of other competitors in the market is a sign of stress.
Positive Aspects towards Cognitive Load Theory
Now, working on this theory & looking for better aspects to manage the strategies are mentioned below:-
Firstly, try to stabilize your day-to-day early routine, become an expert in your work, so that you are not bored for dong monotonous work. A positive attitude can be purchasing good quality if WiFi and other stuff that will be required in your day-to-day schedule. The government has launched many technological apps that would help to cop up your limitation.
Secondly, don’t get distracted by any other work. Efforts should be arranged effectively so that you can am on your present task without any distraction. Example:- You are busy doing work and in the background, TV is on. So it becomes difficult to concentrate on your work, which is the priority. Multiple tasks create chaos during work. One work at a time leads to a stressless environment.
Thirdly, we are living in an era of uncertainty where stress is increasing. due to stress are routine habit changes and can lead to anxiety. To lessen the burden in working memory, one has to practice stress management sessions. A regular healthy meal, doing yoga, good bedtime stories are the ways to deal with anxiety. Avoid listening to disheartening updates on COVID-19, leads to having a fresh mind.
In the end, think of the positive that the pandemic has given us. Ongoing through this situation, we will have some obstacles like drowse in society, anxiety, or any out of our comfort zone that should be tackled by patience and self-discipline. We are not the only ones who are facing this situation.
